The significant car accident risks with a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.05 is the reason why the National Transportation Safety Board, along with many other safety groups, is calling for a lowering of the blood alcohol concentration limit from 0.08 to .05. The National Transportation Safety Board believes that laws that reduce the maximum blood alcohol concentration limit to .05 could reduce the number of drunk driving car accidents in the country by as much as 11%. The National Transportation Safety Board says that enacting such laws could save as many as 1,700 lives in alcohol-related car accidents every year.
The best rule to play by when you are out is to avoid drinking if you plan on driving home, especially if you are a light to moderate drinker. Even a single drink can have an impact on your driving abilities, especially in risky situations like heavy traffic and poor weather conditions.
